DEFINITION
The philosopher & President
of India, Sarvapalli Dr. Radha Krishnan has thrown
revealing light on the term Avadhoot. He says - " The term
Avadhoot is made of four letters in Hindi, The first
letter 'Aa' stands for indestructibility, second letter
'va' stands for supreme purity, third letter 'dhu'
represents the break with all wordly bonds and the
fourth letter 'ta' provides the mantra of 'Tat vam asi' ".
The word "Tat vam asi" translated to English would mean
"Thou art That (Supreme Divinity)". It means that the
Supreme Lord is within each and everyone. It means that
everybody has divinity within him/her.
In the above definition of Sarvapalli Dr. Radha
Krishnan, the letter va stands for 'Varanyetwa' (the
sate of supreme purity and exellence). An Avadhoot is as
pure as water where fishes live but does not smell
fishey, an Avadhoot is like sandal wood where poisonous
snakes live but cast no effect of poision, an Avadhoot
is like Durwasa Muni, whom anger does not affect and an
Avadhoot is like who is not affected by wordly
performances. Really a true Aghor remains unaffected and
unblemished amidst dirt and filth because he is
Param-Shudh (totally pure).
The word Aghor literally means "not difficult or
terrible". Aghor is simple and natural state of
consciousness. There is no place for feeling of fear,
hatred, disgust or discrimination in the eyes of an
Aghor.
An Aghoreshwar is an Avadhoot who has gone through all
the various stages of Aghor and then has returned to
society for the benefit of others. Bhagwan Ram has
described the state of a Kaul or Aghoreshwar in the
following words:
An Aghoreshwar reaches a state where he is totally free
from all karmic bonds. For him there is neither moksha
(liberation) nor rebirth. He becomes a burnt seed which
cannot sprout. When he leaves his mortal frame he lives
and directs from the astral plane or he may enter the
body of a living person and make him an instrument of
his line of action. He is not subject to the currents of
cause and effect which bind the ordinary mankind. He is
law unto himself. In short he becomes the sun of his own
solar system and performs acts either directly or
indirectly which may appear to be baffling.
